Internet Settings - Windows

Step 1

 Make sure the Ethernet cable is plugged into the Ethernet adapter and there are activity lights blinking on your network adapter.

Step 2

 Check Internet Options to make sure there is no left over provider’s settings.

  • Open up Internet explore > Click on Tools > Internet Options
  • Clean out Temporary Internet files by Clicking on Delete Files > OK
  • Click on Connections Tab
    • There should be nothing in the Dial-up and Virtual Private Network settings. If there is everything needs to be removed from that box, unless the customer uses their PC to connect to a VPN.
  • Click on LAN Settings…
    • The only box that needs to be checked is the Automatically detect settings.
  • Click on OK > Apply > OK

Step 3

Check Local Area Connection Properties.

  • Instruction for Classic View
    • Click on Start >Settings >Control Panel >Network Connections > right-click on Local Area Connection and left-click on properties.

          • If there are no network adapters, this means that there is no driver installed for that particular device, the device is bad or there is no adapter installed. To check skip down to step 4.

Or

  • Instruction for Category View
    • Click on Start >Settings >Control Panel Network and Internet Connections > Network Connections > right-click on Local Area Connection and left-click on properties.

          • If there are no network adapters, this means that there is no driver installed for that particular device, the device is bad or there is no adapter installed. To check skip down to step 4.
  •  
    • The only thing that should be listed and checked.
      • Client for Microsoft Networks
      • File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks
      • QoS Packet Scheduler
      • Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
  •  
    • Click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) > Properties
      • Make sure that Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically are selected.

      •  
        • Click on the Advanced button
          • On the IP settings tab, it should show DHCP Enabled and the Automatic metric checkbox should be checked.
          • On the DNS tab, Append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes should be selected and the checkbox next to Append parent suffixes of the primary DNS suffix and Register this connection's addresses in DNS should be checked. All else should be blank.
          • On the WINS tab, a check should be in the checkbox next to Enable LMHOSTS Lookup and the NetBIOS settings should be set toDefault. All else is blank.
          • On the Options tab, select TCP/IP Filtering under settings and click the Properties button. In the new window, all settings should be set to Permit All.
        • Click on OK when finished. 

Step 4

Check Device Manager to make sure the network adapter is installed and working.

  • Right click My Computer > Properties > Hardware Tab > Device Manager
  • Click plus symbol next to Network Adaptors
    • Device Manager will allow you to see the hardware that is currently installed on the system. When you open Device Manager you will see a listing of hardware categories. If these items are all installed correctly, you will see plus signs next to each category and they will not be expanded. If you notice that you have hardware that has a yellow exclamation point icon next to the name of the device, then the device is either not installed correctly or it has a resource conflict with another device. If there are any listings for "Unknown Devices", this indicates hardware that has no drivers installed.

Step 5

 Cleaning out the local DNS cache.

  •  
    • Click on Start > Run
    • In the Run window field, type cmd, click the OK button
    • Type ipconfig /flushdns
    • Type ipconfig /release
    • Type ipconfig /renew

There should only be three network components listed. If there is more then three remove those components not needed. The only items you should have are the following.

  • Client   (Client for Microsoft)
  • Adapter (Name of the network card)
  • Protocol (TCP/IP)
  • If there are no network adapters, this means that there is no driver installed for that particular device, the device is bad or there is no adapter installed. To check skip down to step 4.
  • Click on TCP/IP -> Properties
    • Make sure that Obtain an IP address automatically.
  •  Click on OK when finished. 

 Step 4

 Check Device Manager to make sure the network adapter is installed and working.

  • Right click My Computer > Properties > Device Manager Tab
